MV Collaroy Approaching Manly Wharf – Sydney Harbour Ferry Poster
MV Collaroy Approaching Manly Wharf – Sydney Harbour Ferry Poster
MV Collaroy Approaching Manly Wharf captures one of the most evocative sights of a Sydney summer — a Freshwater-class Manly ferry making her way into Manly Wharf across the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour.
Photographed by Geoff Eastwood in January 1993, this beautifully restored historic image shows MV Collaroy, the fourth and final Freshwater-class ferry, approaching Manly Harbour with another full complement of passengers aboard.
What makes this photograph particularly special is its viewpoint. Taken from the historic South Steyne, with passengers gathered in the foreground and Manly Heads beyond, it captures something newer ferry photographs often cannot — the feeling of actually being there.
It is a wonderful snapshot of the rhythm of everyday harbour life that generations of Sydneysiders, commuters and visitors came to know and love.
An Icon of the Manly Ferry Route
Commissioned in 1988, MV Collaroy was the fourth and final member of Sydney's famous Freshwater class of ferries.
For decades, Collaroy faithfully served the Circular Quay–Manly ferry route, carrying millions of passengers across Sydney Harbour and becoming an enduring part of Manly's identity and Sydney's maritime heritage.
Today, as the future of these much-loved ferries becomes increasingly uncertain, photographs such as this preserve far more than the image of a vessel.
They preserve a way of life.
A Sydney Harbour tradition.
And countless memories of journeys to and from Manly shared by generations of passengers.
Professionally restored and reproduced from Geoff Eastwood's original 1993 photograph, this MV Collaroy ferry poster is a timeless piece of Manly and Sydney Harbour history and a beautiful addition to the home, office or collection of any ferry enthusiast, maritime history lover, former Manly resident or anyone with a special connection to Sydney's Northern Beaches.
