Is the Collaroy Worth Saving?

The research already shows that the strongest argument is not that Collaroy could necessarily return tomorrow as an ordinary commuter ferry. It is that a unique Australian-built vessel with a documented place in Sydney’s transport, maritime and Olympic history deserves a transparent preservation assessment before irreversible destruction.

Facts already verified

Construction and entry into service

> Collaroy was the fourth and final Freshwater-class ferry.

Verified dimensions and capacity

At roughly 70 metres long and 13 metres across, Collaroy could carry as many as 1,100 passengers, with seating for 815.

Official NSW transport-safety reports describe Collaroy as:

> approximately 69.5 to 70.4 metres long

> approximately 12.4 to 13 metres wide

> 3.35-metre draft

> 1,140-tonne displacement

> maximum capacity of 1,100 passengers

> seating for 815 passengers

> normal service speed of 14 knots

Engines and propulsion

Collaroy was powered by:

> two 2,238 kW Daihatsu marine diesel engines

> equivalent to approximately 3,000 brake horsepower each

> normally only one engine was used during routine service

> either or both engines could drive one or both propellers, depending on the selected operating mode. (Parliament of NSW)

She differed technically from Freshwater, Queenscliff and Narrabeen.

The first three vessels used closely related Dutch Lips propulsion-control equipment. Collaroy entered service with a Japanese Kamome propulsion-control system, which was regarded as technologically advanced when installed but left her unique within the class. (Parliament of NSW)

That uniqueness eventually became central to the government’s case for retiring her.

What made Collaroy different

The NSW Government has confirmed that Collaroy’s internal and technical design differed significantly from her three sisters, including:

> wheelhouse control systems

> gearbox arrangements

> propellers

> maintenance processes

> spare-parts requirements.

Secondary historical accounts also consistently describe her as having:

> thicker hull plating

> underwater stabilisers

> enhanced radar for offshore operation

> different rudder arrangements

> a reversed funnel

> open-air upper-deck seating.

The NSW Government has officially confirmed that she was uniquely designed for open-ocean operation, 

"Collaroy was the first and only ferry in the class designed and equipped to undertake open-ocean voyages."

The Olympic flame

Collaroy carried the Sydney 2000 Olympic flame across Sydney Harbour on 15 September 2000.

This is a significant part of her story and should be included, but I would still look for an Olympic archive, government photograph or contemporary newspaper report before describing the precise route or ceremony. The date is consistently recorded in historical ferry timelines. (Wikipedia)

Her 2001 grounding

In February 2001, Collaroy grounded near Manly Point. She was out of service for several months, and reported repairs cost approximately $2 million. (Wikipedia)

This belongs in a definitive history, although probably as part of a balanced operational chapter rather than the emotional opening.

Retirement

Official NSW Government information says:

> Collaroy was removed from active F1 Manly service in September 2023.

> Contemporary histories record her final service as 27 September 2023.

> She was subsequently placed in storage at Cockatoo Island.

> In September 2024, the NSW Government said returning her to passenger service had become prohibitively expensive because of her unique construction and non-interchangeable equipment. (NSW Government)

The distinction is important: she did not simply reach a universally agreed physical end of life. The stated issue was the government’s assessment of her economic viability as a passenger ferry, particularly the cost of maintaining a one-off vessel.

The scrapping decision

The official NSW procurement notice describes the project as:

“Scrapping of MV Collaroy”

and states that the vessel had reached the end of its economic life as a public-transport passenger ferry. The tender closed on 9 February 2026. (buy.nsw.gov.au)

That wording does not necessarily mean the vessel was structurally incapable of preservation, static display, alternative maritime use or adaptive reuse. It means the government judged her no longer economical for her existing public-transport role.

That distinction could become one of the most powerful and defensible points in the campaign:

The government has declared the end of Collaroy’s economic life as a commuter ferry. That is not the same as proving that her cultural, historical or community life must also end.

Ferries once destined for retirement continued sailing, and the government was forced to recognise how deeply the community valued them.

What remains to be verified

> number and nature of reuse proposals received

> engineering evidence supporting demolition rather than preservation

> present ownership, physical condition and location

> whether a scrapping contract has now been awarded.

The facts above speak for themselves, Collaroy should be saved, should be used as what was built for. Just because the government deemed her different is not a reason to scrap her, still think we have the technology to arrange new parts or build, buy or adapt. She has a heritage history as stated above & should be saved.
