Meet the Maker

Lost Manly was founded by Lisa Lipman, a fourth-generation Manly (Freshwater /Harbord) local now living in Norway, yet always with the dream of 'coming home' to where she was born and bred. It was this very longing that birthed Lost Manly and resonates with so many others. As a lifelong genealogist and Local History enthusiast, Lisa needed a place to share and connect with others with their roots firmly planted on the Northern Beaches. This is what Lost Manly Northern Beaches is all about. The merchandise offered on the website is an overflow of this life's work of promoting our local cultural history and heritage.

Lisa's work blends art, history, and storytelling — inspired by her family’s roots on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and her ancestor's journey's from across the seas, which can be read about in her history blog 'They Came by Sea' and 'It Started in My Mother's Kitchen'. Her great-grandfather’s journey from Norway to Freshwater in 1901. Her convict ancestors from Ireland, England and Scotland who, generation by generation made it Manly, and her European Jewry who found safe passage in our land flowing with milk and honey.

Every design tells a story and captures a moment in time — a ferry crossing, a beach scene, a familiar street — reminding us that while Manly has changed, its heart and it's people remain the same.

Manly – Seven Miles from Sydney

Vintage Travel Poster (c. 1930s)

This iconic vintage travel poster promotes Manly as Sydney’s favourite seaside escape, famously described as “Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care.” Featuring a grand harbour steamer powering through open water, swooping gulls, and bold period typography, the artwork captures the romance of early ferry travel and the promise of a carefree coastal holiday.

Originally produced to promote excursions from Circular Quay, this design reflects the golden era of illustrated Australian travel posters, when colour, movement, and optimism defined the journey as much as the destination. Reproduced with care and subtle texture, it retains the charm of the original while offering modern clarity for contemporary interiors.

A timeless statement for lovers of maritime history, Australian design, or anyone with a connection to Manly and Sydney Harbour.
